Founded in 1884 by Portuguese artist Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, Bordallo Pinheiro is known for ceramics that transform the natural world into expressive tableware and decorative objects. Cabbage leaves become plates, tomatoes turn into tureens, while fish, fruit, flowers, birds, and other familiar forms appear with remarkable detail and a generous dose of humor. Produced in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, the collection continues a ceramic tradition shaped by Bordallo Pinheiro’s work as an artist, caricaturist, and designer.
Many pieces are still based on original models created by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro and his son Manuel Gustavo, while newer collections introduce contemporary interpretations and collaborations. Made using traditional ceramic techniques and finished by experienced artisans, the range includes serving bowls, platters, pitchers, boxes, vases, and sculptural centerpieces. More than a century after the factory opened, Bordallo Pinheiro remains unmistakable: colorful, eccentric, technically accomplished, and never particularly interested in behaving like ordinary tableware.
