A ripe tomato transformed into a hand-painted 2.75-liter serving jug. Use it for water, lemonade, sangria, Bloody Marys, or chilled gazpacho, then fill it with garden flowers between meals.

Description

The Bordallo Pinheiro Tomato Pitcher gives a ripe tomato the scale and structure of a generous serving jug. Its rounded earthenware body is divided into deep, irregular sections, with a pouring lip formed at one side and a long green stem curving into the handle. Ceramic leaves gather around the opening, continuing the tomato form across the top of the pitcher.

With a capacity of 2.75 liters—almost three quarts—it is designed for a table rather than a single place setting. Fill it with iced water, lemonade, iced tea, sangria, or a nonalcoholic fruit punch. At brunch, the tomato form makes an especially good container for tomato juice or a prepared batch of Bloody Marys. It can also be used to pour chilled gazpacho into small cups for an outdoor lunch or summer dinner.

The pitcher does not require an entire themed table setting. Used with clear glasses and plain white, green, or terracotta-colored dishes, it provides enough color and detail on its own. It also pairs naturally with the Tomato collection’s bowls, plates, and covered serving pieces when a more complete arrangement is wanted.

Between meals, the pitcher can hold a loose bunch of basil, garden flowers, dahlias, or leafy stems. Its broad red body also works as a standalone object on an open kitchen shelf, bar cart, or dining room sideboard.

The pitcher is made in Portugal from hand-painted earthenware. It is microwave safe for reheating and dishwasher safe, but oven use is not recommended. Avoid sudden temperature changes, and never run the piece empty in the microwave. A full 2.75-liter pitcher becomes fairly heavy, so support the body with a second hand when carrying or pouring.
