The Kaweco Sketch Up Brass Clutch Pencil is a compact, weighty lead holder made for sketching, drawing, shading, and layout work. Its octagonal solid-brass body measures just over four inches long and helps prevent the pencil from rolling across a desk or drawing board.
Pressing the rear button opens the clutch so the 5.6 mm lead can be extended, shortened, or replaced. Unlike a conventional mechanical pencil, the mechanism does not advance the lead by a fixed increment; the user sets the exposed length directly. The removable push button also contains a lead sharpener, making it possible to move between a fine point and a broad edge while working.
The included 5B graphite lead is soft enough for dark lines, loose sketches, and broad shading. It can be used from the point for narrower marks or along its side to cover larger areas. Replacement Kaweco 5.6 mm graphite leads are sold in packs of three.
At 44.2 grams, Sketch Up is deliberately heavy for its compact size. The untreated brass begins with a brighter surface and gradually develops fingerprints, darker areas, scratches, and polished sections through handling. This changing patina is an expected property of the material.
The clutch also accepts compatible 5.6 mm colored leads, highlighter leads, and Kaweco eraser cords. Clean the mechanism thoroughly when changing between graphite and eraser inserts to prevent graphite residue from transferring onto the eraser.
