Description

Designed by Miguel Milá in 1962, Cesta began with an object the designer found rather than one he drew from scratch. While walking through Barcelona, Milá came across an abandoned opal glass globe outside a glass factory. He built a basket-like wooden structure to hold the fragile piece, giving the lamp both its construction and its name: cesta, Spanish for basket.

The white opal glass globe is held within a cherry wood frame made by European craftspeople using traditional steam-bending techniques. The curved structure protects the glass, supports the electrical assembly, and extends upward to form a carrying handle.

Cesta is considerably larger than a conventional bedside lamp. With the handle upright, it measures 22.4 inches high and 12.9 inches in diameter. The frame and glass body measure 17.3 inches high. This scale allows the lamp to work on a low side table, console, large nightstand, or directly on the floor beside a sofa or lounge chair.

The opal glass softens the light in every direction, while the included in-line hand dimmer allows the brightness to be adjusted. The US version requires one dimmable E26 LED bulb, not included. Santa & Cole currently recommends an 11W bulb producing 1,521 lumens at 2700K.

The wooden handle makes the lamp easier to reposition, but Cesta remains connected to its 88.6-inch electrical cord. It should not be confused with the rechargeable Cestita Batería or the outdoor-rated models in the wider Cesta family.
