Description
André Ricard designed Duo in 1973 in response to a specific office problem. A desk lamp needed to provide enough light for paperwork without placing a large shade between an executive and a visitor seated across the desk. Ricard kept the lamp low and divided the light between two symmetrical shades extending in opposite directions.
Each glass shade adjusts independently, allowing the user to change the direction of the two light sources separately. The Opaque Black version keeps more light concentrated on the surface below. The Translucent White version also allows light to pass through the outer glass, adding softer ambient illumination around the lamp. Both options contain opal white inner diffusers that screen the bulbs from direct view.
A push button on top of the narrow central body switches both lights on and off. The lamp measures 14.1 inches wide but only 10.8 inches high, preserving the sightline across a desk or shared worktable. It also works on a console, credenza, low cabinet, or reception desk where two adjustable sources are more useful than a single fixed shade.
The original Duo was manufactured through the 1970s and disappeared from production during the following decade as halogen task lamps changed office lighting. Santa & Cole worked with Ricard on the current 2023 edition, retaining the original low silhouette while adapting the lamp for replaceable LED bulbs.
The US version requires two E12 LED bulbs, not included. Santa & Cole currently recommends two 5.9W bulbs, each producing 806 lumens at 2700K. Bulbs must not exceed 4.5 inches in height or 20W each.
