André Ricard

Born in Barcelona in 1929, André Ricard is one of the leading figures of Spanish industrial design. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has designed lighting, furniture, household objects, appliances, and packaging with a clear focus on function and everyday use. His best-known works include the Tatu lamp, the Copenhagen ashtray, and the Olympic torch for the Barcelona 1992 Games. Ricard also played an important role in establishing industrial design as a profession in Spain. He served as President of ADI-FAD, founded the Association of Professional Designers, taught product design at Eina, and led the design NGO Design for the World. His honors include Spain’s National Design Award, the Creu de Sant Jordi, the Olympic Order, and France’s Légion d’Honneur. In 2023, Ricard completed the Orma armchair with Isist Atelier, combining a slender steel frame with a removable vegetable-tanned leather cover.
