Designed by Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955, the Maija 15 Table Lamp transforms a compact stack of metal discs into a source of warm, glare-free light. It was Tapiovaara’s only household lamp and remains one of his less common designs outside Finland.
Tapiovaara drew inspiration from the dim streets of Baltic cities, where light from homes and shops illuminated the surrounding street. Maija recreates that effect on a smaller scale, allowing its inner light to escape horizontally through the gaps between overlapping metal plates.
The resulting honeycomb-like structure also recalls Maija Mehiläinen, the Finnish name for Maya the Bee. When illuminated, the matte white discs reflect the light internally and soften its passage through the openings. A translucent white methacrylate diffuser further reduces direct glare.
Three slender brass feet support the 12.9-inch-high lamp. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for a nightstand, windowsill, bookshelf, console, or small side table. With an output of 346 lumens, Maija works best as an ambient or bedside lamp rather than as a primary reading light.
The integrated 12W LED produces warm 2700K light with a CRI of 90. A cord-mounted dimmer adjusts the brightness. The LED module is included and rated for 40,000 hours, but the light source is not user-replaceable.
