Miguel Milá

Designer

Miguel Milá was one of the defining figures of modern Spanish design. Born in Barcelona in 1931, he began his career as an interior designer in the studio of his brother Alfonso Milá and Federico Correa, at a time when industrial design was still barely established in Spain. Working with limited materials and a strong culture of craft, he started creating the furniture and lighting he needed for his own interiors, developing an approach rooted in usefulness, simplicity, and hands-on experimentation. In the late 1950s, Milá co-founded Tramo with architects Francisco Ribas Barangé and Eduardo Pérez Ullibarri, producing early versions of the TMC and TMM lamps, two designs that later became classics of Spanish lighting. His work includes some of the most recognizable pieces edited by Santa & Cole, including the TMM, Cesta, Cestita, M68, Americana, and the Estadio series. Milá was also a founding figure of ADI-FAD, helping to shape and promote Spanish design internationally. Over his career, he received the National Design Award in 1987 and the Compasso d’Oro Career Award in 2008, along with several ADI-FAD Delta awards. His designs remain relevant because they were built around honest materials, clear function, and a rare ability to make everyday objects feel essential.
