Description
A hooked beak and a bold, ringed eye give Discus its distinctive profile. Danish architect Hans Bølling designed this hand-painted wooden bird figurine in 1961, taking the rounded body’s shape from the discus of ancient Greece. Produced by Danish design company Architectmade, each bird is made from pine, with a dark painted back and an unpainted chest that leaves the grain visible.
A band of color follows the curve of the face and belly: blue for Small and Medium, red or gray for the two Large versions. The outlines change with the sizes. Large Gray has a longer beak and broader body, while Large Red stands slightly taller. Small measures just over four inches high, making it an easy addition beside books or a desk lamp.
Place one on a shelf or bring several together along a console, turning the figures toward one another to arrange the group. Each bird is sold individually—a good starting point for a collector of Danish wooden figures, or a housewarming gift for someone with a fondness for birds.
