Description
Designed by Àngel Jové in 1971, the Babel Table Lamp is carved from alabaster, using the stone itself to form both the body and the shade. The lower section remains solid, while the upper part is hollowed so that light passes through the translucent stone and reveals its natural veins, cloudy areas, and changes in tone.
Each lamp is made by artisans in Spain, and the character of the alabaster makes every piece different. When switched off, Babel has the weight and texture of a carved stone object. When illuminated, the upper section becomes noticeably warmer and more translucent as the pattern within the alabaster comes forward.
At 15.9 inches high and 11.8 inches in diameter, it is substantial enough for a console, side table, low cabinet, or bedside setting. An inline dimmer allows the light level to be adjusted for ambient illumination.
The US version uses one standard E26 medium-base bulb. The bulb is not included, making it replaceable rather than permanently integrated. Santa & Cole recommends a dimmable LED source, while the socket accepts up to a 60W incandescent equivalent. Because Babel is made from natural alabaster, variations in veining, color, translucency, and surface pattern should be expected and are part of the material.
