Àngel Jové

Born in Lleida in 1940, Àngel Jové was a Catalan artist and designer whose career spanned architecture, painting, film, poetry, performance, interiors, and lighting. He studied architecture and founded the Cogul group in 1964, initially aligned with Informalism before moving toward Pop art. By the mid-1960s, Jové had become one of the artists introducing Arte Povera and conceptual practices to Catalonia, using everyday materials, photography, installations, and visual poetry. His lighting designs grew from the same experimental spirit. Working with alabaster, then rarely associated with modern design, he created the Babel and Zeleste table lamps for Barcelona’s Sala Zeleste. Their sculptural forms reveal the stone’s natural veining and translucency, making each lamp distinct. Jové also worked as an actor, screenwriter, illustrator, art director, and interior designer. Until his death in Girona in 2023, his work never belonged to a single field, linking art and function through material, atmosphere, and light.
