Description
Designed by sculptor Isamu Noguchi in 1944, this chess set rewrote the traditional aesthetic of the game with an innovative twist. Created in a time of scarcity, the set was made from an experimental material that was used at the time for clear aircraft canopies and gun turrets: plexiglass. Sculptural pieces and an imaginative use of materials and colors gave the set its standout, artistic expression. Launched in a new edition that faithfully recreates the original, this IC Design chess set brings the iconic Isamu Noguchi masterpiece to life for a new generation of chess and art lovers.
Inspired by Indian and Persian chess designs as well as his love of Modernism, Isamu Noguchi envisioned this one-of-a-kind set with red and green pieces instead of black and white ones, and with a black board with white and red circular inlays instead of the classic square grid. The three dimensional pieces look like sculptures with dynamic silhouettes, each with its own character. Like the originals, the pieces are made of translucent plexiglass. This Ameico and IC Design chess set also recreates the folding board following the artist’s original tabletop concept. Made in Switzerland, the Noguchi Chess Set is exquisitely crafted and it’s the only authorized edition of the original design. The ultimate gift for chess lovers who are also fans of art and avant-garde design.
