Sekiei is a line of quartz-glass objects developed by Kamata Rikagakukikai Seisakusyo Co., Ltd., a small manufacturer based in Ayase, Kanagawa. Founded in 1959, Kamata built its reputation making high-purity quartz glass for scientific and industrial applications—work that demands serious control over material quality, temperature, and finish. In 2019, the company brought that knowledge into the home with Sekiei, creating sound objects and small interior pieces shaped from quartz glass at very high heat and made one by one in Japan. The Sekiei doorbell is the best example: a light, quiet object that produces a bright tone with a long decay, more like a gentle chime than a “ding.” The line has been carried by MoMA Design Store in New York, and it fits that world—minimal, exacting, and oddly soothing in daily use.
