Description
Overlapping cabbage leaves form the body of this 1.5-liter earthenware pitcher. Their deeply modeled veins continue up to an open, ruffled rim, while a smooth cream-colored handle provides contrast against the green body. Darker glaze settles into the recessed textures, making the leaf structure visible from across the table as well as up close.
The pitcher belongs to one of Bordallo Pinheiro’s best-known naturalistic collections. What began as a satirical elevation of an ordinary Portuguese vegetable has developed into a broad range of functional tableware. Here, the cabbage form is not applied as surface decoration; the leaves determine the shape of the vessel, the lip, and the irregular outline.
Its 1.5-liter capacity works for water, lemonade, iced tea, fruit punch, or sangria. The wide opening leaves room for ice, citrus slices, cucumber, mint, or other garnishes. At brunch, use it for orange juice. For a summer dinner, it can hold chilled gazpacho or cucumber soup to pour into small cups at the table.
The relatively low 6.9-inch height allows the pitcher to remain near the center of a dining table without obstructing views. Its broad, leafy silhouette is especially effective beside plain glassware, white plates, natural linen, or simple wood serving boards; it does not require a complete cabbage-themed setting.
Once the drinks are finished, the pitcher has several useful second lives. Bordallo Pinheiro photographs it as a flower vase, and the wide ruffled opening is well suited to loose garden arrangements, tulips, chamomile, eucalyptus, or leafy branches. It can also remain on the kitchen counter as a holder for wooden spoons and cooking utensils.
Made in Portugal from hand-painted earthenware, the pitcher is microwave safe for reheating and dishwasher safe. Never run it empty in the microwave, remove it promptly after the dishwasher cycle, and avoid sudden temperature changes. Oven use is not recommended. Because the rim is irregular and projecting, allow it some clearance from heavier pieces during washing and storage.
