Description
Gilles Peress’ “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing” is a profound exploration of the Northern Ireland conflict, captured through the lens of documentary fiction. At the young age of 26, Peress first documented the British Army’s massacre on Bloody Sunday in 1972, and in the 1980s, he delved deeper into the region’s tumultuous history. This work organizes a decade of photographs into 22 fictional “days,” reflecting the repetitive and spiraling nature of the conflict. It encompasses days marked by violence, unemployment, mourning, and even moments of ‘craic’ – brief escapes from the grim reality. Held back for 30 years, this 1960-page publication, featuring 1295 images, challenges conventional documentary photography, inviting readers to interpret and unravel the complex tapestry of meaning. Accompanied by “Annals of the North,” a complementary text-and-image almanac, this ambitious project pushes the boundaries of visual storytelling.
