Description
Puglia. Tra albe e Tramonti presents an insightful exploration of Luigi Ghirri’s connection to Puglia, a unique region at the southern tip of Italy that played a crucial role in shaping his career and provided ongoing inspiration. Ghirri first visited Puglia in 1982, where he was captivated by its gleaming white streets, radiant nights, intriguing doorways and archways, potted cacti, lively carnivals, and picturesque beaches. During this time, he also formed lasting bonds with a circle of artists, critics, and curators.
For the next ten years, Ghirri returned to Puglia almost annually, capturing photographs, exhibiting his work, and deepening his comprehension of the region’s understated landscape. These images, many of which are lesser-known and previously unpublished, showcase the textures and patterns of urban life, reveling in visual serendipity and tangible details. The photographs’ subtle sense of discovery and the color film used convey a warm nod to Puglia’s reputation as a beloved vacation spot. Ghirri charts the Apulian territory through the remnants left behind by its residents and visitors, capturing images bathed in the unmistakable light of Southern Italy – the vibrant sun and expressive shadows, as well as the ethereal glow of neon and streetlights after dusk.
