Description
Designed by Finnish industrial designer and interior architect Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955, Maija was his only domestic lamp. He developed the design around the way light appears in Baltic cities, where dark streets are interrupted by illumination from windows and shopfronts. Its name refers to Maija the Bee, and the stacked metal discs give the lamp its honeycomb-like structure.
Santa & Cole’s pendant edition combines matte-white metal discs with a matte brass frame and a white translucent glass diffuser. The diffuser screens the integrated LED, while the gaps between the discs allow soft bands of light to pass through the structure.
Choose the Small model for a compact fixture measuring 5.9 inches in diameter and 5.5 inches high. The Large model measures 11.8 inches in diameter and 10.9 inches high. Although the Large version doubles both the diameter and shade height, its output increases only from 289 to 329 lumens. The choice is therefore mainly about scale rather than brightness.
Both sizes are intended for ambient illumination rather than strong task lighting. The Small pendant can be used alone over a compact table or installed in a sequence, while the Large version provides more visual weight above a dining table, seating area, or entryway. Additional lighting may be needed in larger rooms.
The warm 2700K integrated LED is included and has a CRI of 90 and a rated life of 40,000 hours. The light source is not user-replaceable. Dimming requires a compatible external 1–10V control, which is not included. The planned dimmer and wiring should be confirmed before installation.
