Description

Pharmacy London is a ten-volume artist’s book by Damien Hirst, published by Steidl in a signed and numbered limited edition of 750 boxed sets.

In 2005, Hirst began photographing every dispensing pharmacy in the Greater London area. The project took more than a decade to complete and includes images of 1,856 chemists, pairing exterior views of London’s pharmacies with portraits of the pharmacists behind their counters.

The result is both a photographic record of the city and a continuation of Hirst’s long-running interest in medicine, pharmacy, classification, and belief. These themes have appeared throughout his career, from the Medicine Cabinets he began in 1988 to his 1992 installation Pharmacy, in which he recreated a chemist inside the gallery.

Across 3,800 pages and 3,565 images, Pharmacy London turns an everyday urban fixture into a large-scale visual archive. Organized by London borough, the set moves through the city volume by volume, creating a portrait of place through repetition, signage, storefronts, counters, products, and the people who work within them.
