Steidl was founded in 1968 by Gerhard Steidl (1950). Soon after opening his own screen-printing workshop, he began working with renowned artists, including Joseph Beuys and Nam June Paik. In 1972, the company published its first title. Over the next few years, Steidl expanded its portfolio from political non-fiction books to literature, art and photography. In 1994, the publishing company launched an international photobook program, which now includes some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned photographers and artists. Apart from focusing on high-end production and design values, founder Gerhard Steidl also selects the paper and binding materials for each title, overseeing the entire production process.
