Description
Make the right move and choose a minimalist modern chess set that transforms the beloved game into a work of art. Originally created in the 1920s by iconic photographer and artist Man Ray, this chess set was inspired by his friendship with legendary artist Marcel Duchamp, an avid chess player. Launched in a new edition by Zurich-based IC Design, the Man Ray Chess Set is based on the artist’s original design which was included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To create the chess pieces, Man Ray used pure geometric forms: cube, cone, sphere and pyramid. The traditional silhouettes thus become clean, pure and clarified – their forms reduced to their very essence. In true dadaist fashion, Man Ray added a dissonant element: the knight’s curved shape references the scroll of a violin.
This Man Ray chess set replica comes with solid beech wood pieces finished with a clear lacquer and black paint. Each piece boasts a wool felt pad on the bottom to slide with ease on the beech wood board. The ultimate gift for a chess fan who loves art and minimalist design.
