Enric Sòria and Jordi Garcés

Barcelona architects Enric Sòria and Jordi Garcés began working together after meeting in the studio of Oriol Bohigas. Their collaboration, which continued for more than two decades, brought a rationalist approach to architecture and design, with an emphasis on geometry, proportion, and practical function. The duo completed a wide range of residential, cultural, and public projects, including work on Barcelona’s Science Museum, the Picasso Museum, and the Vall d’Hebron Olympic Pavilion. Their architectural background also informed their approach to lighting. Designed in 1974, the Sylvestrina lamp reinterprets the familiar form and warm glow of a traditional oil lamp through a simple metal structure and cylindrical glass shade. Later adapted by Santa & Cole into portable and wall-mounted versions, the design reflects Sòria and Garcés’ ability to reduce an object to its essential elements while preserving a sense of warmth and intimacy.
