Carlo Nason

Designer

Carlo Nason (1935–2026) was an Italian designer from Murano, where he grew up among the glassmakers in his family’s factory. Early experience with glassblowing gave him a close understanding of the material’s possibilities, which he explored through lamps, vases, and sculptural objects. Sketches led to repeated trials at the furnace, where he could test the shape and fit of each component. He used layers of transparent and translucent glass to soften light, drawing on the rounded forms produced by the blowing process. During the 1960s and 1970s, Nason developed an extensive range of lamps for A.V. Mazzega. He later worked with I TRE and Murano Due. His Medusa lamp, now reissued by Established & Sons, recalls the shape of a jellyfish through curved, mouth-blown opaline glass. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Corning Museum of Glass.
