Álvaro Catalán de Ocón

Designer

Álvaro Catalán de Ocón is a designer who works with ideas as much as materials. His approach is defined by curiosity—about process, about function, about the human hands that shape an object. Best known for the PET Lamp project, where discarded plastic bottles become woven lampshades in collaboration with artisans, his work always finds a way to connect design with people and place. For GAN, he applies the same thoughtful perspective to rug-making, creating pieces that honor both traditional weaving techniques and contemporary design principles. With a background in product design from Central Saint Martins, his work strips objects down to their essence, letting materials, textures, and craftsmanship tell the story. Each rug is more than a surface; it’s the result of time, skill, and a designer who understands that the most interesting things happen when design steps back and lets the process lead.
