Plastic Rivers

The Plastic Rivers Collection by Álvaro Catalán de Ocón for GAN transforms satellite imagery of some of the world’s most polluted waterways into striking topography rugs. Each design represents a real aerial view of four major rivers—Ganges, Indus, Niger, and Yangtze—capturing their winding courses and surrounding landscapes. These topographic rugs don’t just mimic natural terrain; they tell a story about the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Hand-tufted from 100% recycled PET fibers, these terrain rugs give discarded plastic a new purpose, offering both visual depth and sustainable craftsmanship. The varied pile heights replicate elevation changes and river basins, enhancing the satellite image rug effect. Large in scale, each piece serves as a bold statement for living spaces, bringing geography, design, and sustainability together in a way that sparks conversation.
