Most of us know this device as a “French Press,” but that description doesn’t quite match the unique origins of this modern carafe. Unglazed Yixing Clay, which was discovered around 1,000-2,000 AD around Taihu in Jiangsu, China, forms the elegant body while wooden handles serve to accent and complement the dark charcoal hue (despite the fact that Yixing is best known for its natural violet color). In fact, the native material is held in particularly high esteem for its ability to absorb traces of the liquids, creating a more complex flavor over time. Once it’s yours, the pot will assume the fragrance of your favorite blend — whether that’s a floral tea or a full-bodied java.
