A compact cast iron horned owl designed by Nobuho Miya for Kamasada. Handmade in Morioka and finished with black urushi lacquer, the self-standing TS044 works as both a decorative object and a substantial paperweight.

Description

Named Mimizuku, the Japanese term for a horned owl, this compact cast iron sculpture was designed by Nobuho Miya for Kamasada. Two rounded eyes sit within broad recessed planes, while the pointed upper edge suggests the owl’s ear tufts. The body is reduced to a gently tapering volume, allowing the grain of the iron and the casting process to remain visible.

Each piece is handmade in Morioka, Iwate, using Nambu ironware techniques and namagata, or green-sand casting. The ornament is finished with black urushi lacquer, which may vary slightly across the surface and reveal a silver-brown tone in certain areas.

The owl stands without a separate base and measures approximately 3 inches high. Place it on a desk, shelf, or bookcase as a compact sculpture, or use its 1.76-pound weight as a paperweight. Small differences in form, surface texture, and finish are expected from the handmade production process.
