STRiDA began as a graduate thesis project and transformed into an international phenomenon. Back in 1983, mechanical engineer Mark Sanders enrolled in the Industrial Design Engineering program run by the Imperial College and the Royal College of Art in London; he completed the folding bike in 1985, receiving the RCA Giorgetto Giugiaro Award. In 1988, the bicycle won all UK Cyclex Bicycle Innovation Awards and by 1992 over 25,000 models of the first version had been sold. STRiA won several more awards over the years, including the I.D. Magazine’s Annual Design Award in 2000. In 2002, Taiwanese manufacturer Ming Cycle began distributing the various versions of the bike throughout the world, before buying the STRiDA brand in 2007.
