Oitomi’s origins can be traced back to 1848 when it was founded as Hoshodo in the current Mizusawa-Haneda district of Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Genta Oikawa, the founder, initiated this venture under the auspices of the Date clan, primarily crafting pots for the Date family. This marked the beginning of Oitomi’s journey, deeply rooted in the tea ceremony, a tradition upheld for over 170 years. The ironware industry in Iwate Prefecture, with its foundations in Morioka and Oshu, has been recognized as a traditional craft under the name Nanbu Ironware. This designation honors the enduring allure of ironware, a craft passed down through generations in this region. As a collective of craftsmen, Oitome is committed to sustainable manufacturing practices. Its mission is to preserve and utilize iron, a fundamental resource that has supported human civilization from the earth’s inception. Oitomi is dedicated to ensuring that the legacy and utility of ironware are passed on to future generations, maintaining its relevance and significance in the modern world.
