Forty color postcards featuring 20 Japanese advertising designs from the 1920s and ’30s, presented in an illustrated keepsake box

Description

Japan Moderne is a boxed postcard set devoted to the development of Japanese commercial art between 1928 and 1930. Its 20 designs are drawn from The Complete Commercial Artist (Gendai shōgyō bijutsu zenshū), a 24-volume publication that examined posters, shop windows, signs, packaging, advertisements, and other forms of modern visual communication.

The selection shows how Japanese designers combined local graphic traditions with the international modernist currents of the period. Bold lettering, saturated color, geometric compositions, and playful illustrations appear throughout, including works by Sugiura Hisui, Tada Hokuu, Hamada Masuji, Fujisawa Tatsuo, Murayama Tomoyoshi, and Ishimoto Kikuji.

Printed in four colors, the set contains two copies of each design, for a total of 40 postcards. The 5 × 7-inch cards come in an illustrated keepsake box and can be mailed, framed, or kept as a compact reference to an important period in Japanese graphic design.
