Description

A fascinating glimpse into industrial animal agriculture, Pig 05049 chronicles all of the different products made using the raw materials provided by a single pig. Rotterdam-based designer Christien Meindertsma documented the process in this photo book. The name refers to the number of a pig raised and slaughtered on a commercial farm in the Netherlands. In the book, the designer presents the use of every body part of the pig via products made with specific raw materials. Apart from the expected food products, like bacon, for example, she also found that a pig can provide the raw materials for a huge range of non-food items. Among the 185 products found by the author, there’s ammunition, cigarettes, bio diesel, and train brakes. Pig 05049 by Christien Meindertsma is currently in its 5th edition. The book has received the Dutch Design Award and the Index award in the category Play.
