Poul M. Volther

Designer

Poul M. Volther (1923–2001) was one of the key figures in Danish furniture design’s formative years. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, Volther brought a deep respect for craftsmanship into his work when he became head of FDB Møbler’s design studio in 1950, following Børge Mogensen. His focus was clear: to create well-made, affordable furniture for everyday life, in step with the new social ideals of postwar Denmark. Volther’s designs avoided unnecessary decoration, favoring honest construction and comfort over appearance alone. His J46 spoke-back chair from 1956 became a staple of modern Danish homes and remains one of the country's best-selling chairs to this day. Beyond his work for FDB Møbler, Volther continued to produce enduring designs—including the iconic Corona chair—and later taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, influencing new generations of designers.
