Paul Anker Hansen

Paul Anker Hansen was a Danish designer whose work grew from a lifelong fascination with animals and a natural talent for woodturning. Raised on the island of Bornholm, he trained as a veterinarian but spent much of his free time shaping small wooden animals as gifts for family and friends. What began as a personal hobby gradually developed into a design career centered on simple forms, expressive details, and a sense of play. Hansen believed that childhood curiosity should remain part of adult life, an idea reflected throughout his work. His best-known design is the Owl, created in 1960 after years of experimenting with its shape and proportions. Made from wood and designed with a movable head, the small figure captures the character of the animal with only a few carefully considered elements. Today, the Owl remains in production through ARCHITECTMADE and is regarded as a distinctive example of mid-century Danish wooden design.
