Karin Carlander

Designer

Karin Carlander is a renowned Danish textile artist and curator based north of Copenhagen. Her journey in the world of textiles began at 19, when she traveled to Provence to apprentice with Jacqueline de la Baume Dürrbach, a noted weaver who collaborated with Picasso on tapestries. Carlander then honed her skills at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen, graduating in 1987 with an MA in textile design. A transformative three-month study in Japan, as part of her program, ignited a deep appreciation for Japanese design and craftsmanship, which continues to influence her work. In 1988, Carlander established her own studio and spent the subsequent years creating unique hand-woven textiles, collaborating with prominent companies as a textile designer, and curating and developing concepts for Danish furniture design exhibitions, notably with Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling (SE). Her work skillfully reimagines traditional Nordic crafts, utilizing textiles in everyday applications. Carlander's design process is an experimental blend of drawing and hands-on loom work, allowing for unexpected and serendipitous discoveries. In 2013, she launched her brand, TEXTILE No., which became a Masters of Linen certified member in 2016, underscoring her commitment to quality and craftsmanship in the textile industry.
