Enrico Franzolini

Designer

Udine-based architect and designer Enrico Franzolini moves easily between buildings, furniture, and the occasional installation. Trained at the universities of Florence and Venice—he graduated in 1979—he first appeared at the Venice Biennale in 1972 with a series of experimental objects, a sign of the material curiosity that still drives his practice. His studio, founded in 1981, starts every project with a studied reduction: how little structure, joinery, or gesture will satisfy the brief? That question underpins hillside houses, civic pavilions, and compact interiors as well as chairs and lamps for Alias, Knoll International, Cappellini, Moroso, and Foscarini. Across scales, you see the same grammar—clear lines, honest details, and lots of room for light to do its work. Several buildings have earned national prizes; products like the Big Bang lamp for Foscarini have become fixtures in design collections worldwide. Franzolini still sketches by hand in his Udine studio and spends weekends cycling Friuli’s backroads, filing away colour and shadow for the next commission.
