Christoffer Harlang

Designer

Copenhagen-based architect, designer, and author Christoffer Harlang heads a tight-knit studio he founded in 1998. With two to three long-standing collaborators, he moves between civic buildings, adaptive-reuse projects, and furniture conceived for everyday use. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy and the AA in London—and holding a PhD on Alvar Aalto—Harlang begins each commission by reading the site: weather, materials close at hand, memories held in walls. That attitude shapes the cliff-edge Hammershus Visitor Centre on Bornholm, created with Arkitema, and the conversion of Carlsberg’s listed brewhouse into the Hotel Ottilia. On the object scale he keeps joinery honest and hardware serviceable, whether in the Clavis door handle for Randi or the stackable Robust seating series for Skagerak. Clients range from the A.P. Møller Foundation to Denmark’s Nature Agency, united by a wish for work that will still feel right decades on. Harlang teaches at the Royal Academy, lectures from Melbourne to Tokyo, and writes widely on Scandinavian modernism—ongoing ways to test ideas before they reach the drawing board.
