Alessandro Mendini

Designer

Alessandro Mendini (1931-2019) is widely considered to be one of the most influential postmodern and contemporary Italian designers as well as a leading figure in the Radical design movement. Born in Milan, he studied at Politecnico di Milano, graduating with an architecture degree in 1959. His architectural work includes the Groninger Museum in The Netherlands and the "Teatrino della Bicchieraia" theater complex in Arezzo, Italy. As a designer, he created hugely influential work that challenged convention. His masterful use of pattern, color, and contrasting elements has inspired generations of designers. Alessandro Mendini’s notable designs include the Proust armchair, Lassú chair, and Amuleto lamp. He has received the Gold Medal at the Triennale di Milano, three Compasso d’Oro awards, and France’s Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres title.
