HIIVE is a Berlin-based brand rethinking the beehive by looking closely at what wild honey bees have used for millions of years: the tree hollow. Developed from designer Philip Potthast’s industrial design thesis and shaped further with co-founder Fabian Wischmann, the project moves away from the standard beekeeper’s box toward a more protective, cave-like form designed to support a healthier microclimate inside. The structure uses natural and recycled materials, including hemp-wool insulation, and its modular system is meant to make care, harvesting, and long-term use more flexible for beekeepers. What makes HIIVE interesting is not only its unusual silhouette, but the way it treats design as a tool for ecological repair—less about imposing a human solution, more about giving bees a habitat that feels closer to their own. It’s a smart, quietly radical idea, and one that brings design, sustainability, and beekeeping into the same conversation.
