Description

Delve into the world of “Cleaning,” an exquisite exploration of the everyday act that transcends borders and cultures. Published by Lars Müller Publishers and edited by renowned Japanese designer Kenya Hara, this 504-page compendium offers an in-depth look into the manifold dimensions of cleaning, from the personal to the public, the mundane to the poetic. With 374 vivid illustrations, the book captures a spectrum of activities—be it the meticulous washing of Persian carpets in a mountain stream, the deep-cleaning of a ship, or a child’s whimsical sorting of toys. Each chapter categorizes these diverse forms of cleaning, making it a comprehensive guide to this universally shared practice.

Designed collaboratively by Kenya Hara and Takuya Seki, the book features evocative photography by Yoshihiko Ueda and Taiki Fukao, complementing texts that possess a poetic resonance. The accompanying essays and observations offer readers the opportunity to reconsider this often-overlooked aspect of human interaction with the environment. Rounding off the volume is the multilingual essay “Pleasant, Somehow,” presenting the philosophy behind the rituals and techniques of cleaning. Enrich your perception of this age-old practice, as “Cleaning” elevates the familiar to the realm of the extraordinary.
