Description
The Original 315 Desk Lamp – Navigation Edition brings back a little-known Anglepoise design developed in the 1940s for navigators working over chart tables aboard long-range maritime patrol aircraft. The original project adapted George Carwardine’s spring-balanced lamp mechanism to produce a tighter, more controlled area of light. For this 2026 edition, Anglepoise’s in-house design team re-engineered the archive model for contemporary desks and studios.
Compared with the broader shade of the Original 1227, the 315 uses a much smaller polished aluminum shade and a GU10 spotlight bulb. This concentrates the beam on drawings, documents, books, models, or other detailed work instead of spreading light around the room. The articulated arm lets the lamp extend across the work surface, while the cast-iron base provides stability within a compact 5.9-inch square footprint.
Two additions turn the base into a useful desktop organizer. A metal clip at the rear holds notes, sketches, or reference cards, while a polished holder at the front keeps a pen or pencil within reach. A notebook and pencil are included with the lamp.
The silver-and-black finish stays close to the engineering character of the archive design. The polished and lacquered aluminum shade is paired with satin-black aluminum arms, black nickel-plated fittings, a cast-iron base with a steel cover, and a twisted black fabric cord. The US version includes a 7W GU10 LED bulb and an inline on/off switch.
