Veglia replaces the conventional lever nutcracker with a small hammer and a dedicated maple wood anvil. Designed by Anna and Gian Franco Gasparini for Coltellerie Berti, it turns opening walnuts and other in-shell nuts into a shared activity around the table.
The hammer combines a natural ox horn head with a 304 stainless steel shaft and a hand-stitched leather grip. Every horn head has its own coloring, bands, and markings, so no two examples will look exactly alike. The round maple base provides a stable surface for cracking shells and a central holder that keeps the hammer upright between uses.
To use Veglia, place the wooden base on a stable surface, position the nut on top, and strike it with controlled taps while keeping fingers away from the impact area. After use, the hammer returns to its upright position in the center of the base rather than disappearing into a utensil drawer.
The Italian name is worth preserving. Veglia can refer to an evening gathering, which suits Berti’s portrayal of cracking nuts together during cold winter nights. The object has an element of humor, but it is made as a serious kitchen tool using horn, steel, leather, and maple.
