Description
“Caruso St John’s Collected Works Volume Two” offers an insightful journey through the practice’s pivotal first twelve years in the 21st century, showcasing their unique approach to architectural history and creativity. Rejecting the myth of constant novelty, the volume delves into their engagement with the past as an active component of the present, and their work with existing structures. It highlights the influence of cities like Milan, Chicago, and Rome, their use of ornamentation, and Switzerland’s role in their evolving path.
The book features some of Caruso St John’s most acclaimed projects, from the transformation of Tate Britain to the innovative Newport Street Gallery for Damien Hirst, alongside a variety of exhibition designs, competitions, and lesser-known works. Rich in content, it includes unseen drawings, references, and new commentaries, capturing the cultural milieu of their practice. Contributing to their narrative are diverse writings that have influenced Adam Caruso and Peter St John, ranging from T.S. Eliot to Rosalind Krauss, offering a deeper understanding of their architectural philosophy. This volume is an invitation to explore the ‘alchemy of the everyday’ in architecture, reflecting on how our world is built and perceived.
