A complete facsimile of the three-volume masterpiece, it features 367 hand-colored plates depicting the splendid gardens at Willibaldsburg Castle in Eichstätt, Bavaria. This edition not only preserves the visual magnificence of the original work but also enhances it with authoritative texts and modern classifications.
The Hortus Eystettensis was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen to immortalize the castle’s palatial gardens. Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary, along with a team of engravers, meticulously documented the diverse plant life, presenting species from all four seasons. The book was a marvel of its time, showcasing plants from various locales in a decorative, aesthetically pleasing style that marked a significant evolution in botanical illustration.
Despite the destruction of the original gardens during the Thirty Years’ War, Besler’s work has endured as an iconic piece of botanical history. This facsimile, based on a copy from the University Library of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, includes detailed descriptions of each plant, highlighting their botanical, pharmaceutical, and symbolic importance. Essays in the appendix provide historical context, linking the book and the gardens to their rich past.
Today, this edition makes Besler’s vision accessible to a wider audience, capturing the beauty and historical significance of the Hortus Eystettensis, a work that commands over $1,000,000 at auction.

Delivery: Our standard shipping provides delivery to the front door of your residence or the dock of a commercial building. Our dedicated delivery team will carefully transport the item(s) from the truck to the first available dry, protected area outside your premises (front porch, garage, etc.)
What's Included: Standard delivery includes delivery to the front door. For multi-unit buildings, the order may be delivered inside the entrance to the building, but not to individual apartment doors. In some instances, a signature may be required. Please note, this option does not include inside delivery to the room of choice, unpacking, assembly, or removal of packing debris.
