This edition honors Anna Atkins, the first woman to harness photography for scientific documentation, showcasing her pioneering work in full. “Anna Atkins. Cyanotypes” reprints her seminal collections “British Algae” and “Cyanotypes of British and Foreign Ferns,” marking the first complete reproduction of these works.
At the cusp of the Victorian era, Atkins embarked on an innovative journey in her Halstead, Kent laboratory, using the cyanotype process to create striking photograms of algae and ferns. These became the first books to incorporate photographic images, blending art with scientific exploration. Although the cyanotype technique was discovered by John Herschel, Atkins was the first to apply it artistically and for botanical studies.
Her works, including collaborations with Anne Dixon, are notable for their scientific accuracy and ethereal beauty. The process, resulting in Prussian blue images, highlights the delicate forms of botanical specimens against a vibrant backdrop.
Drawing from the New York Public Library and J. Paul Getty Museum, this edition features over 550 cyanotype impressions. Introductory essays by Peter Walther delve into Atkins’ work’s scientific and art-historical significance, celebrating her as a female pioneer in a field dominated by men.

For multi-unit buildings, the order may be delivered inside the entrance to the building, but not to individual apartment doors. In some instances, a signature may be required. Please note, this option does not include inside delivery to the room of choice, unpacking, assembly, or removal of packing debris.
