A metaphor, a mystery, or just a game, the enigmatic charm of the Russian matryoshka doll has captivated and inspired designers since its creation at the turn of the 20th century. Serbian product developer Sasa Mitrovic’s take on the stacking wooden dolls moves the matryoshka principle into playfully design-directed metafictional ground. Introduced in 2013 at Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the stacking Pantone-coloured Matryoshka furniture series is built to expose its own function, but is happy to break its self-referential character to keep your possessions mysteriously and stylishly behind closed doors.
